Our History
Melville Shipping was founded by Ernest Melville (more popularly known as “Ernie”) in October 1960 at JJ Ribeiro’s building, South Quay, Port of Spain. The first agency handled was the Fednav vessel M/V “Federal Haven” transporting bauxite from the Guianas and calling at Trinidad for bunkers.

Melville continued to blossom and represented significant Principals over the subsequent years. In 1977, Melville Shipping was offered the liner agency of a Dutch company, KNSM. As a result of various Dutch shipping consolidation and acquisition by Nedlloyd Lines B.V., this subsequently became Nedlloyd Lines and thence P&O Nedlloyd. Melville Shipping was eventually bought by the Neal and Massy Group in 1977.

Melville Shipping Limited is one of the largest shipping agency in Trinidad and Tobago, an industry which comprises about seventy-five agencies servicing both the large international vessels to the very small carriers of the inter Caribbean Trade. The company is and has always been a leading member of the local Shipping Association, a mutual group charting the direction of our shipping industry. Ernie Melville and past CEO's Michael Marshall and Stewart Sankar are past presidents of the Shipping Association.
